Self love?

//”If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else!”//

I’ve seen a lot of posts today on self love and it’s a very interesting topic for me to discuss, those of you who have known me for a long time will know all my life I haven’t been a self love Kinda gal, despite coming over as incredibly confident this is far from the truth and is often a persona I hide behind! Over time I’ve changed my hair colours, lost and gained weight and everything between ,all in the hope of perceiving myself as beautiful!

It’s taken me to this very moment to question what truly defines your beauty? And as cliche as it sounds it most certainly isn’t your beach bod nor your hair length!

It truly is the person you are and the life you cultivate for yourself, and using that knowledge I can finally put on paper (or social media) that I do love myself not because of how I look, but because of the person I am,the amazing people I have around me and the life I lead in.

So you wear that dress, you chat up who the f***k you want and you live, fearlessly!

Photographing an Eccentric

if you follow me on social media you will be fully aware of my love affair with the gorgeous Sal Wilcox from “Sounds of an eccentric”. After meeting in November last year at the mighty Kazoopa fest it is clear to see we hit it off from the word go! From a mutual love of music to both being avid gin connoisseurs, there’s very few things we don’t bond over.

I was due to be photographing in Leeds that day anyway so dragged Sal along for the ride and a couple of drinks in the process! After stumbling across canary wharf I whapped the camera out and sneaked a couple of shots of Sal for good measures!

If you follow her you will of already seen these shots, but I wanted to post them as well as they are a collection that I’m quite proud of!

Enjoy

The new “purple thread single “glitter”

Purple Thread are a female fronted, grunge-rock band from the mighty city of Leeds. Taking you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions every time you play their tracks. Expect headbanging ,basslines and an insane vocalist with more hooks than capt.hook himself.

Their debut EP, ‘Evergreen’ was released on 6th June to overwhelmingly positive reviews and showcased the bands personalities and potential.

Luckily for me I got asked to review their newest single “Glitter” and what a track it is too! The track itself is released on the 2nd march and is so worth a listen! With addictive vocals and a solid underlying drumbeat “Glitter” will have you obsessed with Purple Thread from first listen.

Not only are you being gifted with a new track but keep an eye on their twitter for some more exciting announcement coming very soon!

The Honeymoon Suite ‘Poser’ single review

The Honeymoon Suite

Poser Single Review

Alt Rock four piece The Honeymoon suite are about to gift us all with their latest offering “poser”

I’ve been lucky enough to have a sneaky early listen and it’s fair to say it’s definitely worth a listen. As a follow up single to their “Taste-less” debut released last September, ”poser” is noticeably a crossbreed between alt-rock and a hint of slacker indie thrown in there for good measures. With stunning lyrics and a solid set of lungs on their vocalist, the honeymoon suite are definitely a band to keep your eyes out for!

Go give “poser” a listen for yourselves on January the 13th and get yourselves down to some live dates of theirs in the future!

2017,What a year!

Most of you that know me will know I am a bundle of feistiness and almost impossible to keep up with…However there are certain subjects I keep hidden away. As this is my “thank you” post of the year we are going to leave no stone unturned, so strap yourselves in folks things are gonna get sentimental.

This year truly has been a mad one for me, at the beginning of the year it is fair to say my life was in crisis, I wasn’t living at home, failing in education and in a very unhealthy relationship. It is fair to say I was caught in an almighty shit storm. On the back of all this I shut myself away from the world and lost many of the people around and to the ones that stayed I thank you, sincerely. For a very long time music has been an escape for me  (even if it was through Olly Murs back in 2011) and being put down for my music taste and un-permitted to attend gigs  was a very difficult pill for me to swallow.

On top of all this I had a decline in my health, for those of you who are unaware (which is most of you) I have cystic fibrosis, a life limiting condition which originally gave me a life expectancy of 9! But we don’t talk about that because there is no element of my life that I allow to be confined. And this leads me to my first and biggest thank you of all my mum. For your sacrifices, unconditional love (even when I’m being a bitch) and most importantly your undivided support in absolutely everything I do…oh and putting up with me belting out tunes 24/7 (honestly the woman deserves a medal with my singing voice)

My next thanks is also very close to home and it goes to my gorgeous friends, for putting up with me even when I’ve got major concert hangover and have been travelling all weekend! I couldn’t be luckier to call you my girls, and I love you all very much! Particular love to my little sister Issy B and my best friend Hannah, I adore you!

This thanks is a little bit more of a musical related one with a hefty back story! Earlier this year I had a meeting with one of my CF nurses who gently informed me that the charity who granted my lifetime wish, was struggling to grant the same wish to other terminally ill children and that I wasn’t willing to see happen! So we stepped into action to begin organising a fundraiser for October 2018.We went from having no venue (stressed) to having three various offers from three amazing venues! None of which could have been done without the gorgeous Kirsty Chandler from “rays of sunshine.” Bring on October 2018!

I don’t even know where to begin writing this segment as there are so many amazing people to thank! To begin I’d like to thank every single manager, promoter, photographer & blogger who I’ve worked alongside this year! You make my life so much brighter and create undoubtedly the best work environment I could’ve ever hoped for! Particular love to Sal Wilcox (for inspiring this piece) and inspiring me everyday, to many more crazy nights together my girl!

Last but by absolutely no means least, my bands…

Every single one of you has been an absolute pleasure this year and I can’t thank you enough for that! From supporting some of the biggest acts in the country to playing stages at Leeds and reading! To many more success stories, stage invasions and general madness to come. Particular love to Puppet Theory & The Wholls, you’re lush

Thank you all for making my 2017 so life changing, let’s get proper messy in the New Year!

To a crazy, sweaty and mosh pit filled 2018!

To post or not to post that is the question?

To write this post or to not write this post,

Has been the question on my mind over the last couple of days.

Conclusively I decided, I have this platform to voice opinions and pull this community closer together, so let’s freaking do this.

As I’m sure 99% of you will already be aware over the last couple of days a massive scandal has come to light with a band called “misfires” at the very centre. And typically this is not something id approach, however as a regular gig-goer and also a young female within an industry, I felt this needed approaching.

For me and I’m sure many other young women, a crowded sweaty venue is one of the very few places I truly come into my own and showcase the confidence I normally bury within. So for me reading some of the comments made by the frontman of misfires, it truly did stir some rather unpleasant emotions and made me question, is this really a safe environment?

I instantly shot down this doubt, yes a concert is a safe place of acceptance and our enjoyment of these gigs should not be put on hold or doubted at any stage. I then began to do some background research and approached one of the girls in the middle of the scandal (she was super nice, might I add). But all I saw in the screenshots and personal anecdotes she showed me was 14-15 year old girls been put in an extremely  uncomfortable positons. And to be quite frank the initial apology/statement was not up to standard to even begin to apologise for something that should never happened in the first place…Mattys withdrawal from the band was a good decision however unfortunately for his bandmates it is likely that misfires will never recover.

However this is not a post to rant and rave, this is a post to explain that these actions are not acceptable or condonable under any circumstance.

However disturbing this was to read and write upon, I will still continue to attend my gigs and fulfil the one thing I am truly passionate about and I firmly encourage any fan young or old, male or female, affected or unaware. Please keep travelling to your gigs, enjoy your music (no matter what your genre) and support the live music industry because for every one band who are a bit clueless there are hundreds of amazing artists who would love your support!

Interview with The Wholls

So unfortunately I didn’t get to interview The Wholls on the actual night of Kazoopa (probably because I was too busy fangirling a tiny bit). But luckily enough for me they agreed to do a typed interview, and what an interview it is! Normally I go through and type it all up but I’m gonna leave it in Q&A form and let you feast your eyes on  its true glory! Once again I can’t thank these boys enough for taking the time to chat with me and you will most definitely be seeing some more Wholls stuff from us in the future! Because some things ladies & gents are too good to miss.

Q. How did you enjoy your Kazoopa set?

A. “It was top drawer! Our first festival headliner I think so a real honour. Crowd 10/10. Rider 9/10 (bottle of Jack). Food 9/10 (Mac and cheese). We don’t do maths but that’s some numbers right there. After party was a biggun too. Breed, Jordan Allen, Vida, we salute you.”

Q. Will you be joining us at Kazoopa again next year?

A.” Is that an invite?”

Q. Did you go see any of the other acts playing throughout the day?

A. “Managed to catch a couple but we came straight to Leeds from Germany so we missed a good chunk of it unfortunately”

Q. If you did, who did you see and what did you think?

A.”We saw Avalanche Party and Sheafs. Real good rock n roll sets both of em. Twitter was going off all day though, a few bands raised the bar by all accounts”

Q.Highlight of the night?

A.“Not getting in the van to go home and partying till the next day with loads of bands. Loved it. Breed gave me a lift home (150 miles away) and they even dropped off some gear to another band (forget who) in Manchester on the way. Which was completely in the other direction. That’s what I’m talking about. Absolute gents.”

Q. What can we expect from you boys next?

A. “We got a few more shows this year (with Bang Bang Romeo, Paves, Breed, Record Street) then a tour in Europe next February and we just recorded a new video over in Berlin which is something we’re really proud of. Can’t give too much away but it was the hardest thing any of us have ever done. Probably should have died. Can’t wait to see the final edit. That’ll be out after the New Year. Then…. we’ll see. Studio, tours, festivals and motorway service stations.”

Q. Where would you like to see the band go in the future?

A. “Kind of given up guessing to be honest. We got a whole load of new tunes that we wanna record. Happier than ever with our songwriting. Guitar music is coming back and we are happy to ride that, have an adventure along the way and keep playing live. We’ve had a taste of some big stages this year and it tasted good. Like roast dinner good.”

Q. When can we expect new music?

A. “Next year for sure. We’re already dropping a few in our set. Best way to polish em up.”

Q. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions, we will be seeing you very soon for certain! How would you like to sign off this interview?

A. “Check our album out on Spotify, go see a band and remember….”

“Llamas are for life, not just for Christmas. “

KAZOOPA 2017

We began our day with a stealthy treck up to the lending rooms to collect wristbands and bump into the ever legendary (if not slightly stressed) Arianne ! After a brief chat on venue stresses and timetables for the day,we parted and I headed straight down to Oporto to see my favorite local boys “stray scene”. Considering they were one of the first acts of the day, the boys accumulated a hefty crowd and performed some belting tunes accompanied with a large helping of Scarborough wit and charm.

In my astounding wisdom and desperation to see the mighty “Naked six” boys I then trekked straight back up to the Packhorse (in a rather hefty pair of heels I might add). The York based duo have just completed a intensely successful touring stint and their Packhorse set did not disappoint .Bringing a raw garage punk vibe to kazoopa. Their set was heavy and didn’t leave a non-rocking body in the building.

Next up for me was the immensely talented “Jackobins” who were  playing the headline venue The Lending Room. Formed in 2014 and dubbed to be the next big thing. These boys certainly didn’t disappoint with an array of mighty tunes and an image to match. Keep your eyes peeled for big big things for these boys in the future.

Next up was perhaps my sweatiest set of the day “Mint”.  Oporto really brought out the best in these boys and their crowd. From mosh pits, stage dives and a very close bonding session between myself and members of “The Brazen” (who couldn’t physically move away from me due to the amount of people in Oporto).  Potentially one of the strongest frontmen in the game right now Zak puts on a show and a half! From passing pints to a Grimsby obsession, the real question is there anything this man can’t do?

Remaining in Oporto I next had the absolute pleasure of watching the mighty “Cabezudos”.With hair flowing behind him and clad in  a pair of leather trousers (“size 8 women’s” ,don’t you know) Front man Jack made a dramatic if not slightly delayed entrance to stage, and instantly created a stage presence to match that of international selling artists. The boys delivered a mighty set list constituting of a range of fan favorites. The boys strap-line is “coming to conquer” and conquer they certainly did.

Avalanche party where do I even begin.Small town boys, with a hell of a lot of noise. With an intense garage punk sound louder than war, their set was certainly one to remember. With the whole lending room head banging! Things got soaking, sweaty and covered in lager.Just the way a crowd should be.

so all in all kazoopa festival was sweaty and exhausting, but hell was it worth it! Major love to mick and Chantelle for their usual fab job! See you all next year.
